French 5-Day, Day 2, France, 1984, M40

Day 2 was immediately south of Day 1, similar stuff, maybe a little more green. Or at least my time per kilometer was a little slower, about 7. About the only thing I remember is the finish -- the last control was at the foot of an open dune, and from there to the finish the route was up and over two dunes, deep sand all the way. And it was a hot and sunny day (as it was all week).

Never have I seen so many people walking in the finish chute.

Second on both the first two days was Göran Öhlund from Sweden, winner of the gold medal in relay in 1966 (and also 1968?), when he was much, much, much faster.
